Risky or Harmless: Does Roundup Weed Killer Cause Cancer in Adults?

Globally, the glyphosate market will grow at a rate of 4.5% between 2023 and 2028. Yet gardeners and landscapers must exercise caution with Roundup weed killer. Medical studies have linked it to cancer. The UW Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) says glyphosate in Roundup increases the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by about 41%.

Scientists at the Florida Atlantic University found out that a small amount of Roundup leads to nervous system damage. A jury gave $2 billion to one couple who claimed that Roundup use led to cancer.

Records suggest that it’s a crucial decision against the maker of this weed killer, Monsanto. Additionally, an ailing man in California received $289 million for suffering from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after Roundup use.

A Basic Overview of Roundup Use

Roundup is a branded herbicide that includes glyphosate as an active ingredient. The American agricultural chemical brand, Monsanto, started selling this in 1974. The company also came up with a variety of weed killers and various other products. Bayer, the German chemical and drug giant, acquired Monsanto a couple of years back and started to phase out the company name. To date, Bayer is making and marketing Roundup.

Roundup was created for big-scale farming options. Today, users can get it in the garden and home versions. Since Roundup causes cancer, consumers must become aware. People who are most vulnerable to Roundup exposure are:

  • Groundskeepers
  • Farmers
  • Professional gardeners
  • Agricultural workers

Home gardeners have the risk of cancer if they use this herbicide daily to maintain their gardens and plants.

The Legal Complaints Against Roundup

In May 2022, Monsanto settled more than 100,000 lawsuits. The brand shelled out approximately $11 billion by May 2022. Having said that, close to 30,000 lawsuits remain pending. It comprises 4,000 MDL (Multidistrict litigation) cases in California, which aren’t class action suits.

Another roundup lawsuit update is that the Ninth Circuit in June 2022 had filed a decision. The court declared that the Ninth Circuit had suggested the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revisit its verdict on Roundup about any harm caused to the environment or humans. During the same time, the Supreme Court completely disapproved of an appeal made by Bayer in another Roundup legal case.

Not just farmworkers, but any individual exposed to glyphosate can file a Roundup lawsuit. TorHoerman Law has helped such victims secure more than $4 billion in compensation. The law firm has settled more than 10,000 legal cases and helps people through free consultations.

TorHoerman Law shares that the average payout for any person diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and any other cancer ranges between $5,000 to $250,000. Also, individuals don’t need to pay taxes on their settlement checks.

Usually, the lawyers will take anything between 33% to 40% of the entire amount that gets recovered. However, the contingency fee agreements can vary based on individual case circumstances.

Exposure to Roundup–Health Hazards That Can Prove Fatal

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that glyphosate, the primary component in Roundup, is carcinogenic. It has resulted in cancerous tumors in rats and mice. Furthermore, a lab study affirmed its harmful impact on an individual’s DNA, which in turn could result in cancer.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) happens from continued exposure to Roundup. It starts in the body’s white blood cells, known as lymphocytes belonging to the immune system.

The kind of NHL an individual gets detected with is based on the lymphocyte that got affected. , the B-cells ensure that humans stay secure from viruses and bacteria. Generally, the antibodies get attached to germs and outline them for the immune system to destroy them.

On the other hand, T-cells slow or boost the immune system cell activity based on the existence of abnormal cells or germs. Other than lymphatic system cancer, research links Roundup leads to various other cancers in the lungs, prostate, breast, and brain. It also leads to blood cancer.

Conclusion

The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) suggests that exposure to glyphosate should be completely phased out. People searching for an alternative for their lawn must select organic options for eliminating weeds and not face the fatal effects of harsh chemicals.

The solution here is to search for OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) options available at the garden and home stores. Usually, these products agree with the National Organic Standards, causing no physical or environmental harm. The University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources states that organic herbicides work best for small weeds.

A few other options to count on are industrial vinegar, corn gluten meal, mulch, and herbicidal soaps.
