Huawei Watch GT Runner best smartwatch review

The Huawei Watch GT Runner is very similar in design and features to the Huawei Watch GT 3, the model that was released a few months earlier. Despite the weight and breathability improvements, the GPS aerial has been relocated. This means the satellites can pick up signals faster.

Those who are planning their first race or noticing a lull in performance are the best candidates for a sports watch such as this. You can balance training and recovery with a variety of tools, and Huawei’s ‘AI coach’ helps you create a tailored training plan to achieve your goals, whether you’re running your first 5K or planning a 10-kilometer run.

While the Watch GT Runner’s GPS tracking may not be as accurate as we would have liked, its heart rate monitoring does compare favorably with watches that cost several times as much, which is great news for anyone who wishes to do some gym-based cross-training as part of their training regimen.

The sleep monitor is especially impressive, as it features SpO2, stress monitoring and SpO2 tracking. The app even tracks your naps and accounts for them in your energy and recovery statistics. It is possible to modify the settings of your Huawei Health watch so that additional apps can be downloaded or health monitoring can be tweaked.

Our review unit has a very strong battery life, especially for an AMOLED smartwatch, and lost less than half a charge at the end of a week of regular use with day-to-day exercises, exceeding Huawei’s estimates.

There’s no indication when the Watch GT Runner will be available in the US.

Release date and price

  • In January 2022, it will be released internationally
  • An affordable price range

Starting January 26, 2022, Huawei began selling the Huawei Watch GT Runner internationally. €299 (about $340 / £250 / AU$470) is the price, which is comparable to the Garmin Forerunner 245, Garmin’s medium-priced running watch.

It also costs about the same as the Suunto 5 Peak, which was released a few days earlier and offers a similar level of functionality for a lightweight running watch.

Features

  • Extensive health tracking tools
  • Make calls from your wrist
  • No support for contactless payments

Many of the sensors and everyday tools used in the Huawei Watch GT 3 are also found in the Huawei Watch GT Runner. The Dual-Band satellite tracking system, it supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, and QZSS, making your location more accurate in areas with limited line-of-sight between you and the sky. It’s especially helpful for a watch like this that you would use frequently in a built-up environment (more on that later.

The watch comes with a SpO2 sensor so you can monitor blood oxygen levels, which is particularly useful if you are training at altitude with your watch. As it’s not a medical device, the Watch GT Runner is only designed for sports training. While there has been research on smartwatch usage for illness prediction, the Watch GT Runner is not a medical device. As a post-workout spot check or for use continuously, this sensor can be used for any time period. It is great to have a range of options, especially if you want to prolong the battery life.
