Choosing the Right Degree: B Tech or BE?

If you have already begun your research on engineering degrees to get you must have come across this phenomenon already. In our country, most engineering colleges offer either B Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or BE (Bachelor of Engineering) as the options for undergraduate degrees in engineering. Let us end your confusion right now by saying that both these courses are more or less the same, with similar syllabi, eligibility criteria, duration, career prospects, and anything else you can think of.

Even in the eyes of foreign employers, either of these degrees from any of the best private engineering colleges in India will hold the same value. The difference in the names of these courses is the only one – usually, institutes that offer mostly engineering courses offer B Tech courses while universities that offer other kinds of courses too offer to BE courses.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for most engineering courses in our country are more or less the same, differing slightly from institution to institution:

  • A student needs to pass their 10+2 with the PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) combination (or Biology for the relevant branches of Engineering)
  • A student may need to sit for competitive exams like JEE, depending on the college
  • Some of the best engineering colleges in Chhattisgarh also offer these courses for those who have completed their diploma or polytechnic degree in the relevant field.

Specializations

Now we come to the reason why picking an engineering course can be so hard. Engineering is a very diverse field with applications in many sectors. So it makes sense that there are plenty of engineering specializations too, for students to choose from. Some of these specializations are:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication
  • Automobile Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Information Technology

and many more.

You may be asking yourself now then how can I choose among so many options? We propose asking yourself some questions that we have compiled to get to that answer.

Questions to Ask Yourself to Choose the Engineering Degree Best Suited for You

There are a few things that you have to consider before getting admitted to just any branch of engineering in any of the government or best private engineering colleges in India. We have attempted to address these factors in the form of questions you can ask yourself, so you can arrive at that decision yourself, instead of just getting recommendations as you might get from your family or friends.

  1. What Excites You?

This is the first and most important step in choosing the right branch of engineering for yourself. Ask yourself what you might enjoy doing for work. Or what excited you as a child. For example, if you were like me, taking apart the motors of toy cars for fun and repurposing them for other uses then maybe choosing Mechanical Engineering or Automobile Engineering may be the right choice for you.

  1. What Career Options Will it Provide?

The next step in choosing the right engineering specialization is to examine the career options it may provide to you after graduation. For a more detailed understanding of career options, consult the internet, ask your seniors and attend all counseling sessions at every college you can to get a better idea of what you can expect from your future career with a specific specialization. Look at where you can be in 4 years or more and ask yourself if that is what you want before picking a specialization.

III. Which College will be the Best for my Preferred Specialization?

This step comes only after you have already decided on or at least have a fair idea about which specialization you want to pursue. To overcome this hurdle, take ground visits to colleges that have the same or related specializations, and check out their facilities, labs, faculties, etc. See whether they offer internships or not and where they do as internships provide you with work experience in the actual field. Also, check out their affiliations and if they are AICTE (All India Council For Technical  Education) approved as that will be a factor in your placements.

  1. Can I Afford It?

This list of questions would be incomplete without the most important question of all – one that involves thinking about the financial investment you are making in yourself. Analyze the fee structure of colleges that you are interested in; if you can pay them per semester or have to in full; their scholarship and educational loan facilities before you send your application. Engineering colleges fees in India range all the way from 1.2 Lakhs to 10+ lakhs so you will have plenty of options to choose from based on your budget.

Future Scope of Some Common Specialisations

We have compiled a list of some of the various job profiles and average starting salaries depending on the specialization you might choose in an engineering course. Keep in mind that all figures are gross estimates as the actual salaries depend on a lot of factors.

Specialization Job Profiles Average Starting Salary (INR)
Mechanical Engineering Control and Instrumentation engineer, Maintenance engineer, Mechanical engineer,

CAD Technician, etc.

4 – 6 LPA
Computer Engineering Developers, Design Engineers, Solution Integrators, Network Administrators, Database Administrators, Software Testers, Domain Consultants, Industries Officer (Technical) 4 LPA
Electronics and Communication Engineering Service engineers, Network planning engineers, R&D Software engineers, Network Administrators, Software Analysts, Technical directors 3 – 6 LPA
Information Technology Network Administrators, Database Administrators, Data Security Administrators, Information System Managers, Computer Technicians, Computer Support Specialists 2.4 LPA

We hope to have made the painstaking process of choosing the right engineering degree a little easier with our step by step approach in this blog.
